Rural Population of India might not have many choices but they are adopting Solar Energy even as developed world is still shying away by calling it expensive.

New Delhi, July 26, 2011 – Millions of people in India are not connected to the electricity grid and even those who are connected, do not have a reliable power supply. Leave alone, the rural population, even swanky new townships have no reliable grid supply and are reliant on diesel based gensets to get reliable power for their homes and businesses.

THE PROBLEM
Even if people knew the timings for power outages, they could plan accordingly to face it, but no one knows when the grid will fail on you. The least people could get would be a reliable “unreliable grid”, if they knew the timings of power outages.

Now leave alone an unreliable grid. There are so many places in India where there is no grid. People there have no access to electricity. The number of people who have no access to electricity in India is arguably more than the total population of the United States.

MORE PROBLEMS THAN A SOLUTION
There is RAJIV GANDHI GRAMIN VIDYATIKARAN YOJANA (RGGVY), a policy to electrify rural India, but it recently got a poor report card of performance from Green Peace in their social audit in Bihar. It would be least to say that it is not doing what it is supposed to do.

THE SOLUTION LIES WITH THE PEOPLE
A lot of people have shown interest in modest home lighting systems that run on Solar. The government is also playing a positive role in this area now, with the National Solar Mission. People in the country side are adopting Solar Energy as a fast growing alternative to the grid as they are tired of waiting for the grid to arrive. A lot more needs to be done in this area, but the start is good. With the prices of Solar Panel having dropped to record levels in the recent past, the benefit is passing on to the people who had no access to electricity. It is an interesting solution. Even though counties like India and China argue that the west had access to cheap power in their days of high growth and they had the policy of ‘burn baby burn’, their eastern counterparts are being burdened for their wrong doings. We believe that instead of bickering over the past, we should learn from these villages who have stopped complaining about the grid and moved on. The world needs renewable energy and there is no denying it. Solar, Hydrogen and a decentralized smart grid are the future, the sooner you realize that, the better.

CONCLUSION
The financially backward people from rural India are switching to Solar Energy, even though they did not have many choices. It is a good thing. People all around the world should learn and make the switch. The energy crisis and the climate crisis are looming large and the choice needs to be made today. The rural India has made its choice. Its your turn.
